Este Platanal

This work was born as a tribute to the farmers of all the Colombian territory, to their work, their fight dares of the time, to sow, to cultivate and to work the land as an act of resistance from times ago until our present time.

The series is called the plantain because it is not only grown in a large part of the Colombian territory, but also because Colombia is nicknamed with mockery and pejoration as being the plantain banana or as being the banana republic. This nickname was born of historical and social facts, such as genocide, forced displacement and massacres of farmers, such as the banana plantation in 1928 to name but one.

For years, peasants, indigenous peoples and Afros have been suffering from corruption, the plunder of land, the abandonment and submission of the state. This led them to gradually abandon their fruit or vegetable crops for other illicit crops.

This series of drawings and paintings is made with graphite, charcoal, oil paint and gold leaf. It represents the peasants in this action of sowing and preparing the land, giving value to this work so important that they carry out in the fields.
